Hollywood Hypothesis - Lights, Camera, Experiment!
My students need 5 Learning Science Activity Tubs covering Electricity, Matter, Simple Machines, Force/Motion, and the Solar System, along with a Digital Microscope and prepared slides.
Imagine being a fourth grade movie star who gets to build a roller coaster, conduct a rocket race, and view your very own cells on TV. With your help, this can be a reality for my students.
Hello, I teach math and science to fourth graders in a Title 1 school in Tennessee. We are ability grouped and are experimenting with team teaching this year. All students switch classes, so I see about 65 students each day between my math/science groups and homeroom. My students have a curious, inquisitive nature, and enjoy learning new things. They love to do anything that is hands-on.
Our county has a very high poverty/ unemployment rate. Many of our students' parents have recently lost their jobs. Many of our students live in non-traditional homes. Our school district does not have extra money to spend on school supplies and students don't have the money either. Our school does not have a science lab, so we don't have any science equipment/supplies. My students have expressed an interest in conducting science experiments, but we simply don't have the funds to buy the materials. Also, we don't have an Educational Assistant to assist in the set-up. Albert Einstein once said, "Knowledge comes from experience." I truly believe this is true in the classroom. I can stand up and depart knowledge through lecture and reading of the textbook, but they will learn much more by hypothesizing, experimenting, and making conclusions on their own. This gives students ownership of their learning and they see the relevance of the information. I would love to give my students an opportunity to gain experiences through experiments which will increase their science knowledge.
I need 5 Learning Science Activity Tubs that covers Electricity, Matter, Simple Machines, Force/Motion, and the Solar System. These kits come complete with experimental cards with hands-on activities based on national and state standards, materials needed to do the experiments, 3-D models, flip books, vocabulary cards, charts, and reproducibles. This makes set-up and execution a breeze. I also need a digital microscope and slides. The digital microscope comes with software and a USB cable which will allow me to hook it to my computer, which is already hooked to my TV via an S-video cable. This will allow all students to view the sides on the TV at the same time. The microscope also comes with blank slides, which will allow us to make our own slides. Since our classroom theme is Hollywood, I will videotape the students conducting and explaining the experiments so they will be real "movie stars." We will set aside one day near the end of the year and have our movie premiere. We'll watch our science movie and have popcorn and drinks.
This will really benefit my students because they will see science come alive, and they will get to actively participate in the experiments.
You will make it possible for my students to see science in action and get to be a part of it. You will let them see how important science is in their daily life. You never know, you could inspire one of them to become a scientist that finds a cure for cancer or a solution to our energy crisis.
