Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
When you go to the theater, movie or live, you will hear: Dim the lights! Quiet on stage! I want to create that environment for my students. My students are on the autism spectrum and have labels of high-functioning autism, Asperger's Syndrome, or Pervasive Developmental Delay. We are a moderate poverty high school within a suburban district that has just opened the first classroom in this school to provide support to these unique students.
The architect who designed our school in the late 1970s never would have guessed that the traditional materials of cement, linoleum, and cinder block would hinder the learning of a student. Who would have though that 30 years after the school opened that fluorescent lighting would cause some children to completely shutdown? Children who are on the autism spectrum often have difficulty with sensory overload caused by noise, lighting, and temperature. If we want these students to achieve to their potential, this is an area that must be addressed.
In order to reduce some of the echoing effect caused by cement and cinder block, we would like to add some carpeting to the classroom. We would also like to turn off the fluorescent lights so that students are not distracted or upset by the buzzing produced by such lights. However, we are an older school with limited space, and there is a very good chance that we will be in a different classroom the following year... And so, everything must be portable! Hence, the reason for requesting small carpeting & floor lamps that are easily movable.
By supporting this effort, you are helping to ensure that my students will be productive citizens and a part of their communities. You will help my students make it through high school, and onto that oh-so-important diploma.
