Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach Spanish at in a rural community, with a high immigrant population. The high school is a low-income school with a 55% free and reduced lunch rate. I teach Spanish to a mixture of students from grades 9-12 with the majority being 9th and 10th graders.
I would love to be able to assign my students projects that are based on culture and life in Spanish speaking countries, everywhere from Mexico to Peru, from Cuba to Spain. It is important for students to see how other people and other cultures live. Not only is it important for their Spanish studies, but also for their knowledge, appreciation and tolerance of people around them. Having an understanding of other cultures is the first step in accepting them.
Foreign language studies are very important in the world today, and since most colleges require foreign language classes both on students’ high school transcripts and as part of their own college graduation requirements, my students need to be prepared. As a teacher, I need to do everything I can to help students begin to think globally and prepare them for college.
While our school library is a good size for our school, it has limited books on researching and discovering the Spanish speaking world. There is not a lot of funding for specialty books. The nearest large, research type library is a 45 minute drive away. Although that does not sound far, because of our high poverty rate, that distance is next to impossible for most of my students.
My students need a variety of non fiction, informative, reference style books about the Spanish speaking world on topics such as people, culture, food, geography, government, arts and traditions. I also need the protective contact paper to cover the books with to make them long-lasting. As a teacher of Spanish, I want to open my students’ eyes to the different countries and their culture and give students a better understanding of the language. I want my students to be able to have culture at their fingertips in my classroom, not at a library 45 minutes away.
I cannot do this on my own and my school does not have the funds to purchase the books. I am seeking help to make this simple hope become a reality. Your donation will bring books about the culture, life and traditions of the Spanish speaking world right into my classroom. It will give students the tools and materials they will need to complete important projects based on understanding the Spanish world and language. Most of these books have large colorful photographs in them that show the world, not just describe it. You can open the world to my students, you can bring them culture.
