I teach special education students in a rural school in Florida. The majority of my students are from high poverty, minority families. About 40% of my students are from migrant farmworker families. They are also struggling readers, who are reluctant to tackle books unless forced to read.

Every year, we read about African-American history and discuss the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s. My Hispanic students ask "What about our heritage?" They want to know about the struggles faced by migrant farmworkers through the years, and about the heritage of their ancestors from Central and South America. They are hooked, now I want to get them reading on a subject they are interested in!

I have no books on Hispanic heritage that are written on a level my students can understand. For many of my students, this is the first time they have expressed an interest in reading anything or in learning more about a subject, but I have nothing to give them. With a selection of books on their reading level, they will not only learn more about their heritage, they will learn valuable reading skills as well.

Your donation will provide my students with books they can read about a topic that intrigues them. More importantly, your donation will help them discover their heritage and build pride in who they are.
