Miz D, What Does This Word Mean?

My students need 25 classroom copies of "Webster's Collegiate Dictionary".

"Ms. D, how do you spell "atrocious"? In my 9th grade, college preparatory English class, you spell it "D-I-C-T-I-O-N-A-R-Y". After a flood in my class room last year, the few copies we have are not only outdated and worn, but mildewed!

My students must look up the "Word of the Day" first thing every class. Additionally, when I am asked how to spell a word, my usual response is to send the child to "look it up" in the dictionary. The few dictionaries I have remaining in my class are old library cast-off copies printed before my students were born and which have seen years of use and abuse. Pages are missing, "colorful" words have been written in the margins, and yes, after the flood, they SMELL! English is a growing language and new words are added to our lexicon regularly. Too many times I have put up the "Word of the Day" only to hear, "Miz D. that word's not in here!"

Vocabulary building is essential to education and absolutely vital for college-bound students. My students are required to look up a "Word of the Day" each day as well as vocabulary words linked to lessons and literature readings. For each term they must find pronunciation, part of speech, definition, synonyms and antonyms. This can take up quite a bit of my instructional time when 30 students have to share dictionaries. Presently, there are six dictionaries in my classroom that are shared among as many as 30 students in a class.

Please help my students expand their vocabularies and broaden their horizons by funding this very worthy project. THANK YOU!
