Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Did you ever read comic books when you were a kid? Graphic novels are simply book-length novels written in a comic book format. In other words, images and text arrive together, work together, and are read together. This format is especially appealing to my high-need and special education seventh-graders who have all but given up on reading.

When I recently surveyed new teachers on the area in which they felt they needed the most help, they overwhelmingly responded "student motivation." The growing popularity of graphic novels among adolescents give us teachers an opportunity to expose students to a unique genre with motivating potential.

Graphic novels are a way to spark a wide range of students’ interest and ultimately motivate them to read more often. However, graphic novels are not just for low achievers. The intricacies of graphic novels require the reader to interpret the connection between text and graphics in order to understand the plot. Kids must constantly be drawing conclusions and using the same reading strategies and more that are needed to comprehend traditional text.

You can make it possible for my reluctant readers to get more excited about reading, responding to reading, and participating in discussions about books.
