Using a stopwatch, a meter stick, and a fan car makes it difficult for students to learn the difference between velocity and acceleration because they don't collect accurate data. I teach 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Science.
Teaching motion as an abstract concept is difficult especially when perfect examples need to occur in a vacuum. As much as I can I need to provide my students with concrete examples that help them learn the concepts of motion. I especially want students to learn the difference between velocity, which does not have a constant force, and acceleration, which is what happens when you apply a constant force.
I have tried using fan cars to have students measure and record the motion with the fan turned on and with the fan turned off. If kids collect inaccurate data they may convince themselves that velocity is the same as acceleration. With five motion detectors, teams of students can collect more accurate data. I already have LabQuest machines that connect to the motion detectors where students can use the graphs to compare velocity to acceleration.
Doing physical science with 21st century tools will best prepare my students for college at a time when our country needs students to pursue education and careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). This project would support having more students enter college for STEM careers.
