This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach 5 year-old kindergarten students in rural South Carolina. We are a Title One school with 93% of kindergarten students receiving free/reduced lunch. Our school is featured on SC ETV's "Corridor of Shame.Due to recent state budget cuts, my school does not have the funding available to purchase the supplies that my students need.
One area that I desperately need supplies for my students is in literacy. In my district, students are expected to leave kindergarten with the skills in place to read short words and recognize many high frequency words. This can be quite challenging for many students that do not have the prerequisite literacy skills in place. The language arts program that my school uses does not have child friendly center activities to use to help students to master literacy skills.
I teach using literacy work stations in my classroom. Students rotate to various stations each day to learn from hands-on activities. The games and hands-on learning activities will be used with students during guided reading and literacy work stations. I plan to use these games throughout the school year.
Your generous donation will help to provide my students with learning center activities, games and books that will help them to master the prerequisite skills that they need to have success with beginning reading. Please help me to develop of love of learning to read in my kindergarten students!
