Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I teach science to 6th-8th grade middle school students. Middle school students need to see how science relates to the world. What better way than through Forensic Science! This summer I attended a week long course on teaching Forensic Science to students. Forensic science incorporates biology, chemistry, physics and math to reconstruct what happen at a crime scene. My students have expressed interest in how crimes are solved am always looking for ways to keep them interested in science.

In my school there are no extra curricular activities (art, music, gym, computers, etc). Our school is an academic only driven school. Many times students do not connect what they are learning to real world situations. The number one question they ask is why should I learn or know this information. During one class discussion, my students seem to linger on the crime that occurs in the neighborhood. Also during career day many of my students ask to sit in on law enforcement presentations. Crime is real. Student interest is high. Why not channel this energy in a positive direction?

With your support, the materials will allow students to contribute more in each activity. There will be a strong emphasis on laboratory work, inquiry and problem solving. Students will work in teams. These are skills students need to develop to use in the work force. The resources listed will create high interest and provide positive motivation for students. In class, students will identify and lift prints by using the finger print kits. They will learn the procedures in evidence collecting through sketching the scene using graphing paper. They will document the crime scene through Forensic photography using the digital camera. They will use blood typing to narrow down potential suspects. They will present their findings through group presentations.

My students and I will be so honored if you would help fund this project. You will be planting a seed in a child to see other possibilities in the field of science. Students will be able to see the connection between the science and how it applies to their life. As a teacher, I will be able to put in action more of what I learned in the Forensic Class. I am so excited and appreciate you giving me the opportunity to do more with my students. Thank you so much!!
