Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am an 8th grade language arts teacher at a low-income school in Chicago. I have taught at my school for ten years and know how important it is to get great books into the hands of my students.
Our students, like people everywhere, come from low-income families where great literature is not always readily available in their homes. As the reading teacher, inspiring students to read is my job and great books are necessary to create a love of reading. Our school does not have a large budget for books and the teacher must often use their own money to supplement dwindling class libraries. I have found that my 8th grade students can be convinced to put down their R.L Stine for a great Poe story-the problem is I only have one copy! I'll never forget the look on my students' faces when I read "The Tell-Tale Heart" aloud for the first time and heard them gasp at the description of the "hideous heart". Poe is a master at building suspense and portraying the perils of madness.
Your donation will help me show them more of this master storytellers work. They will be able to read Poe with me and discover a new type of horror book besides the R.L. Stine novels we seem to have so many of. A set of 30 novels will enrich my teaching and allow our students to experience true horror writing. From the horror of being bricked in behind a wall for eternity in "The Cask of Amontillado" to the eerie squawk of the ominous bird in "The Raven"- I know my students will leave me lifelong Poe fans.
Please bring a classic horror writers words to life in my middle school classroom. I can't take another year of having Stine be their horror writer of choice! Let Poe live on in our young readers!
