Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a 6th grade teacher in a low-income elementary school in Chicago's South Side neighborhoods. We have approximately 1850 students in our school, with 96% being economically disadvantaged.
Many of my students come to school without adequate supplies and rely on their teacher to provide them with materials. Therefore, technology is an area of concern because the majority of the students in my classroom do not own computers at home and consequently do not have knowledge of basic computer functions like saving a document or using the web for research. Computer time in a school our size is limited due to the fact that over 60 classrooms are competing to use 1 computer lab that holds only 30 computers!
That's why this project is so valuable and important! With our own Net Books and storage/charging cart, my students can use computers in their classroom whenever it's convenient which will provide countless opportunities for them to increase their knowledge of basic computer functions. Net Books are perfect for class projects involving research and writing. Writing is becoming a very important component in today's curriculum and having Net Books handy will motivate students to want to write because kids love to use computers. It gives them a break from traditional pencil/paper writing. Net Books are small and light-weight, which makes them very mobile and easy to use within the classroom. Students can move around with their Net Book, which makes working with partners and small groups easy and fun.
Technology is advancing everyday, and students in schools need to have access to computers to form a basic general knowledge of the technology around them. With your help, you will make it possible for my students to become tech-savvy! The more my students use computers, the better prepared they will be in a technology driven world.
