This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I am a librarian at a high poverty elementary school, who hopes to instill in my students a love for reading and writing.
I am determined to hook my students into reading by holding chapter book read alouds. This worked beautifully last year. Along with reading, I have activities planned to go along with the readings as well, such as journaling, drawing scenes in the book, vocabulary cartoons for new vocabulary in the novels, etc. I would love for the students to have one composition book in which they can work and continue to work each library class. My students are high poverty students and many cannot even afford to bring classroom supplies, so I know it would be unrealistic to expect them to bring any extra supplies for library.
I would need 360 marble composition books, approximately one per every student in my school. This would provide students with a place to journal, summarize, and simply WRITE each day in library. Then, at the end of the year they would have a composition full of their ideas and opinions about literature we have discussed and read.
You will make it possible for my little ones to appreciate literature and take a leap to becoming lifelong readers and appreciators of literature.
