Lively discussions and debates, much like those you would hear around a family's kitchen table; this is what you would hear if you were to walk into my classroom. The students are always lively and entertaining, and always help me to view literature from a new perspective. My AP Language and Composition students are a diverse group of students from grades 10-12 in a high-need community. Though we are lacking in materials, they are never lacking in creative thought and articulate expression.
Unfortunately, because of the economic hardships of our community, we are lacking funding to purchase appropriate materials. This is my second year teaching this course, and in that time I have had no textbooks and limited other resources to provide students with the necessary materials they need to be successful. I'm hoping that through the generosity of people such as you that we can change this and provide the students with materials worthy of their level of intelligence and enthusiasm.
I would like to teach a unit on the American Dream and literary naturalism, but currently lack the resources to do so. We would use the works to define the ever-changing concept of the American Dream through a variety of genres. Students will read both works, each of which would lead to some really interesting and lively debate. Students will use these pieces as primary sources to answer the following question: Is the American Dream attainable? This will all lead to the final project where students will be asked to create an exhibit for our classroom museum that answers that question and reflects their views on the idea of the American Dream. They will use pictures, interviews, videos, and the books they have read as source material in their exhibit.
By donating to our class, you will be ensuring both a fun and exciting experience for my AP students that is currently inaccessible to them. The two books you would be providing are high interest and challenging, and will provide the students with a better platform of knowledge to prepare themselves for their AP exams and college. We need your help. Thank you so much for your support.
