"I work in a high-need community in New York with students, ages 5-8, with autism. All of the students are diagnosed as children with autism.
The children in my class have huge problems with attention span and they have a difficult time learning basic concepts in math. They tend to get very frustrated during the math lesson. As a teacher, I employ different teaching strategies to meet their learning needs. I employ interactive methods such as games that usually help with those children who have short attention spans and a lack of interest in math. Therefore, the bingo and addition games are very important for them to reinforce their math learning while improving their social skills with peers and adults. I also set up different math learning centers for the children to generalize and reinforce their math skills.
The children are different. The complete set of Elementary math instant learning centers will provide the opportunity for us to address the children’s needs individually. The diverse learning center activities for the children will increase their interest in learning math concepts. The hands-on counters and magnetic clock make math concepts easy to grasp, count, measure and compare.
Our school is a new school and the school was started last school year 2008-2009. Therefore, we lack math resources for children with autism to learn about math concepts. Please help make this possible for the children with autism. Thank you.
My students need math instant learning centers, a magnetic teaching clock, math bingo games, magnetic numbers and counters, and a Jungle Jumble addition game.

Dear Laura, Cij, cathie, Jael, Jen and Anonymous Donor,
On behalf of our classroom, I would like to thank you for your
generous gifts of supporting our Math workshop. Your commitment to helping our
children in learning Math is sincerely appreciated. We have been using the Math
materials for supporting our Math lessons. For instance, the children play the
Bingo games every Friday in accordance with the math lesson (e.g. numbers,
money, time&etc) that the children are learning. That helps them to reinforce
their math learning. The Bingo games also provide them the opportunity to
interact with each other and take turns; which are essential for addressing the
children's socialization skills.
The colorful magnetic counters have provided the children with
hands on manipulative for learning their lessons of addition, algebra (same
& different), comparing position (before, after & between) and groups
(more & fewer). Currently, the children are learning to tell time. The
Lakeshore Magnetic teaching clock is big and colorful. It enhances the
children's visual perceptual and focusing in learning about clock to tell time.
For addressing the students who are lower functioning, the math materials have
been modified to address the child's individualized math skills. As an example
of Money Instant Learning Center, the children who are higher functioning will
count the total amount of an item (e.g. beach ball = 26 cents). On the other
hands, children who are lower functioning will identify the plastic coins.
Once again, thank you so much for the generous gifts. The math
materials have provided the children's hand on manipulative learning. Without donors
like you, it may take a longer time for the children to learn these math
skills.
With gratitude, Ms. W.

Dear Laura, Cij, cathie, Jael, Jen and Anonymous Donor,
Thank you so much for your generous donations to our
project. I am so excited to know that my students will have chance to learn
math concepts through an individualized, interactive and manipulative method. Playing
fun-to-play bingo games will reinforce their math learning while improving
their social skills with peers and adults. For the children that have not
mastered the lessons, they will be assigned to the math learning centers to
reinforce their math skills according to their level. Thank
you again for being so generous and caring about our students. I can't wait to
receive these incredible materials and start the project with my students together.
With gratitude, Ms. W.
