I have been teaching at my high school for a few years now and have come to love my ninth through twelfth grade students. I teach a variety of history classes, including Ancient and Modern World History, US History, World Geography, and DC History. My school is a Title 1 school with a majority of my students living in poverty. Most of my students are Special Ed and have a variety of learning and emotional disabilities. We are a public high school and are considered very low income.
As I said before, I have taught for several years now and in my Modern World History course, we study the Holocaust. Because so many of my students are low ability, I use the book Night by Elie Wiesel as a staple in my course. It is a very powerful and yet is an easy read for my students and many can empathize with his story, which is not easy for a bunch of inner city high school students. Unfortunately, I discovered a few weeks ago that the thirty copies of the book that the Holocaust Museum gave my students was missing from my classroom.
I was absolutely devastated to learn that the books were gone since my incoming sophomores are so excited about Modern World History, especially the Holocaust because we do so many lessons with it. I have three classes of students and each class has at least thirty students. I know that if I told them that we no longer had Night, they would be devastated, which is why I am reaching out to you and the kind donors of DonorsChoose.org to help bring those books back to the classroom.
I'm sure that you can think of a book that you've read in school that has touched your life in some way, maybe it was Night by Elie Wiesel even. But, regardless, you understand how powerful a story can be in the classroom and in the lives of children and I hope that you can find it in your heart to give some of Elie Wiesel's book to my students. I have many students and I'm asking for more than I had before because by having 100 books, all of my students will be able to take the book home and read it whenever it will be comfortable for them. Please find it in your heart to give my students the gift of this story and to cherish the lessons that so many have learned about humanity, faith, and empathy with Elie Wiesel's book, Night.
