Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach many different levels of AVID and English as a Second Language(9th- 11th grade) in a high poverty inner city school. My students will be the first members of their families to attend college and chose to take the AVID elective for all four years of high school. The students come from all over the world and speak approximately 74 different languages.

I have found that students love Stephanie Meyer's novel Twilight and have come across an SAT preparatory guide to help my students improve their much needed vocabulary. Unfortunately, there are no funds to buy any books at this time as there have been so many budget cuts the teachers have even been told there will not be enough paper for the copy machines this year.

I really want my students to learn to love reading as most have never read an entire novel, I want them to experience a non-required book which they will enjoy. The SAT vocabulary boosting book which goes with this novel would be a wonderful way to work on SAT testing skills while enjoying reading as well. With this book, my students will be able to raise SAT scores and enter into the college of their choice. Additionally, they will learn new vocabulary which they will be able to take with them into their lives.

With your help, my students will learn to feel passionate about reading as well as improving vocabulary and test taking skills which will help with their lives overall. My students are wonderful kids who are reaching very high to be able to attend college and trying to escape the poverty of their neighborhood, gangs, drugs, and pregnancy which are issues very rampant in their community. Many of the students have spent the majority of their lives in refugee camps with little or no prior education and have grown so much in a couple of short years, but they desperately need more than the "required" reading.
