This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach 1st grade in a low-income, high needs school. I teach in a collaborative classroom, which means that I also teach all of the special needs students in the first grade.
We have a book room in our school that has zero resources for younger students. Usually, I go around to the public libraries in the community to piece together enough copies of a book to present during reading groups. The kids love Junie B. Jones and are very motivated to learn to read her books.
The books that I have requested will be shared among the first grade teachers at my school. We will use them to encourage literacy in the classroom. Many of the students we teach do not have books at home, so we try to incorporate fun, engaging text in any way possible. To a first grader, no text is more exciting that Junie B. Jones.
Your donation will truly touch the lives of teachers, students, and parents in our school community. Anything that encourages a child to read, is a step towards success for that child!
