Hip-Hoppin' Hands: Poetry for Deaf Students

My students need Magnetic Poetry kits and performance poetry resources.

  • $247 goal

Hooray! This project is fully funded

My class consists of deaf and hard-of-hearing students from across the entire state. Because my students receive their auditory information as a broken or incomplete message, many of them are behind in their reading and writing abilities.

Even though much of our literacy time is spent closing the gaps in the students' reading abilities, they need to have the same opportunities to explore the various genre of literature as their hearing peers. Poetry is often sorely lacking in programs for the deaf and hard-of-hearing because of the highly auditory aspect of the genre. My students need creative, unconventional materials to work with poetry. Rather than a single poetry unit, my students must be exposed to it during the course of the whole year in order to cement the language and flow of poetry into their minds and hearts.

I intend to integrate poetry into my reading and language curriculum throughout the school year in three different ways. First, I will coordinate a phonics poem with a majority of my spelling lessons. As we tackle the different spelling patterns, the poem will provide a fun, engaging way to reinforce our word work, while the spelling study helps make sense of the patterns of the poem. Secondly, the Magnetic Poetry sets will allow my learners to physically engage in word play and language manipulation. All of this poetry work will culminate in a big project for poetry month in April, which incorporates the third part of my poetry vision: performance. Many of my hard-of-hearing students enjoy the strong beats of hip-hop music, so I will use this channel to facilitate poetry creation and performance. We will finish the month of April with a poetry slam, where students will perform published and original work for their peers.

Your help will transform a primarily auditory literary genre into a full-body experience accessible to students with hearing loss!
