Sizzling Science Center

My students need jumbo specimen viewers (set of 12), a big view magnifier, color-changing touch squares (set of 6), a science specimens sorting center, a Who's Hiding in the Garden magnetic board, Feel & Find science game, and Real Bugs Discovery Kit.

I teach 25 eager kindergarten students in a low income school in South Carolina. Each year I have the opportunity and privilege to set the course for each of these students and their education. Kindergarten is the cornerstone of learning. Without a firm foundation, the rest of their education might wobble. One of the best ways to set this foundation is allowing students to explore their world around them, allow them to ask questions about what they find and having them discover the answers to those questions.

The obstacle that I am facing in my classroom is a lack of equipment and materials for my students to explore the world around them. Right now I have a set of magnifying glasses that are very small and a few seashells and magnets. This does not allow for the type of discovery that inspires students to become interested in science.

This year I want to create a science center that I will call the "Sizzling Science Center". I want to provide my students with materials and equipment that will spark their interest in learning more about science. I can imagine how the boys and girls will feel when they come to the Science Center and find a big view magnifier and all the real bugs that come with the Real Bugs Discovery Kit. I can picture them exploring those bugs up close for hours. With the use of the 12 Jumbo Specimen Viewers, the Color-Changing Touch Squares, and the Science Specimens Sorting Center students will learn how to use science equipment properly and safely, how to make observations, and how to conduct investigations. Not only will these materials be used this year in the center, I can use them for years to come and I will be able to incorporate science into many other areas of the day.
