I teach Algebra II to 11th graders at a technology-focused newly founded charter high school. Most of my students come from a high-need background.
Help, my students need motion detectors! Algebra is a study of patterns, relationships and changes. But how can my students understand abstract algebraic patterns? To help my students with their struggle to connect abstract variables to real life, we have been working together on finding visual representations of relationships around us.
Throughout the year we explore linear, quadratic, and exponential relationships of patterns that come from the simple idea of motion. My students have manually tracked the progress of cars traveling at an average speed, they shoot rockets to see a parabola, and they blast off balloons and model rollercoaster motion. My students LOVE hands-on learning, especially with the use of technology. They get hooked on measuring and observation, and they create a real scientific experiment atmosphere. My students would grasp the concepts more easily if they could use motion detectors for precise data collection. The concept of mathematical modeling of real-life (physical motion) patterns would come to life for them in a much more natural and realistic manner.
