My students need 60 composition books, 60 packs of looseleaf paper, 216 pencils, overhead markers, 3 packs of sharpie markers, post-its, self-stick chart paper, and a box of copy paper.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
A new school year is fast approaching, and I know procuring supplies at my elementary school is going to be difficult. I teach fifth grade in a Title One school, which means more than ninety percent of our students receive free or reduced lunch. My students' parents are not always able to supply them with the adequate materials that are needed to be successful scholars.
Our school will be implementing a new reading program that requires our students to produce their thinking on paper, labeling their reading to support their point of view with evidence, and completing various types of writing.
The materials are essential because they will allow my students to acquire skills in note-taking, locating evidence, retaining their thoughts, and producing pithy writing. The purpose for the post-its is to engage the students in jotting down their thoughts in short form, and they can use them as bookmarks to indicate evidence in a book to support their point of view.
The notebooks will be used to promote them to write longer and the loose-leaf paper will be used for publishing. To reach these goals they will need lots of pencils with erasers! The markers are to write on the chart paper, chart paper will be used to create charts and posters to help guide their learning, and the copy paper will be used for templates and syllabus.
Our new reading program is designed to assist our students in cultivating meaningful reading comprehension and writing skills. You can help make a difference in the education of these much deserving young people.
