Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Leer! Reading is one of the most important things that my students can do to practice their Spanish. I teach Spanish to both native and non-native Spanish speakers. I teach at a charter high school in a very high need community where the majority of families live in poverty.
When my non-native students first enter my class, they have a very limited understanding of the Spanish language. It is hard to find reading materials that are at the beginning level, and the students often get lost in the complicated language and highly advanced word choice of most reading materials available at our school.
Providing my students with reading materials that are at their level will help spark their interest in reading in the target language. This will benefit my students because they will be reading short stories that they have already read in their native language in Spanish. The read along books with the audio will also help my students with their pronunciation of the target language. Providing listening activities for my students will help them attain mastery of the target language and prepare for higher level classes such as AP Spanish. These materials will help prepare my students for college because it will help them improve their reading, listening and speaking skills in the target language as well as in their own language. They will also be prepared for college because improving their language skills will enable them to take more rigorous college preparation courses such as AP Spanish Language and AP Spanish Literature.
