Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I'm a second grade Special Education teacher in Brooklyn. My school is a Title I school, and approximately 84% of its students receive free lunch. Every day, my students borrow books from the classroom library to read independently. As often as possible, I sit with each student during independent reading to listen to them read aloud to help build their fluency and confidence as readers. With 25 students in my classroom, I am not able to sit with each student during a period of independent reading. This year, I'd like to enhance the independent reading period by having a variety of books on CD available. By using the classroom computers and the small assortment of iPods available, my students will be able to select a book from this CD read-along kit and listen to the narration of the text as they read the story. As students listen and follow along with each recording, they will build literacy skills and confidence! As a Special Education teacher, I strive to incorporate literature and reading activities into my classroom as often as possible. An assortment of books on CD would be a wonderful way to make this goal possible for my students, particularly those who are struggling with reading. By helping to place CD read-along books into the hands of my students, their reading fluency will increase and a lifelong love of reading will be fostered.
