Photography And Poetry Club

My students will need two digital cameras with 2GB memory cards to take photographs. They will also need the scanner to scan their art work.

'Click,Smile!,Click...My turn!" Kids LOVE to take photographs! My poetry club usually has about 8 kids in it, but add photography to it...I'm sure we will have 20 plus kids!! I teach 2nd grade in a high-need community school. Many of my students come to school without supplies like pencils or backpacks, so I keep a look out for those great sales! Having a Photography and Poetry Club after school would give these children an opportunity to use a camera, learn about design in art and scan it into the computer, and use the photography, writing, and art to create a Literary 'Magazine' on the class website. They would be published authors, photographers and artists - a real motivation for learning.

One of our science curriculum topics includes insects. One of the projects I have for the students is to take close up shots of the insects around the school and present each of the teachers with a copy to use when they get to that unit (as well as using them in the magazine). This is an opportunity for the each of the students to shine when: using the camera, using photo shop, presenting it to the teacher, and in front of peers.

The children could use two cameras with memory cards. The cameras I picked out are pretty simple for them and have large screens, so for first time users, these would be great. The scanner for scanning their art work is student friendly as well. They would not have any trouble using it. It is a 4 step process. Students are so technology savvy, you think it will take a week to teach them, but they learn it in a day!

This project will make a real difference to my students. These are such creative students. They are willing to stay after school and continue to give more time to learning. When it's time to go, I hear the moans, "Can't we stay? Can you order us pizza?" I am proud of these students, they will be the great addition to the future of our world. Thank you for helping them grow by challenging them more with cameras and a scanner.
