I teach a small class of high school students grades 9-12 with significant, multiple special needs. These students have many disabilities which make accessing the curriculum difficult for them including visual impairment and/or motor impairment. All of the teaching items we use must be adapted to each child's needs.
One of the ways students with severe physical challenges can access the curriculum is with assistive technology. My plan is to slowly increase the amount of assistive technology in my classroom and thus increase my students ability to participate and learn. Assistive technology is any tool or device that is used to increase or maintain the functional abilities of an individual with a disability.
Such assistive technology can include switches. Often times switches can be buttons, but they can come in all shapes and sizes. My students need 3 switches (one head tilt and two pancake) and four pieces of switch accessible software included two sequencing programs, a money program and a reading program. A few more switches and more switch adapted software (software that can be run totally with switches and no mouse or keyboard) will bring my plan to life and allow my students more access to the curriculum.
Your donations to my project will give my bring more assistive technology to my students. More assistive technology will mean more learning and that is what school is for!
