"I currently teach Elementary Art at three Title One schools. My art budget has been cut in half and without the assistance of caring donors my students will not have the opportunity to create masks. The students I teach are not expose to the arts and haven't had the experience of seeing masks in a play or art museum. I would love the opportunity to create masks with my students to enrich their cultural and artistic creativity.

The State of North Carolina has recently had to cut funding due to lack of funds. The art program budget was cut in half again this year and it's impossible with the budget to afford to provide the student's with art projects that enrich their cultural, historic, and higher level thinking skills. My students favorite project is mask making. They have been asking me for two years to create Mardi-Gras masks. I don't want my students to miss out on opportunities because we can't afford the supplies. My last hope for my students is to ask for donations and hope that they will make our Madri-Gras Mask dream come true.

The history of mask-wearing during public festivals dates back to the 15 century in Venice. Mardi-Gras celebrates the tradition of the masquerade with decorative and extravagant costumes. This project will teach the students about the history of masks, Mardi-Gras, and the art techniques used to create a mask. These masks will be displayed in the hall, the Board Office, Hospital and sent to various art shows. The students will be able to take their mask home to display or wear.

Your help will make a huge difference in the lives of my students. My students don't have a lot of money but they are great kids who will use you donation to create an awesome mask. I will be glad to send you pictures to hang in your place of business. My students and I would be so grateful and excited if you supported our project. Thanks for your consideration.

My students need 150 plastic masks, 2 acrylic glazes, 30 plastic squeeze bottles, 3 sets of liquid watercolor and 2 gallons of gesso.

Mrs. C. sent this note after the project was fully funded:

Dec 8, 2009
Dear Michael, Katie, Cindy, amy, Lisa, Sara, Wendy, Alicia, Victoria, Laura, M. Giant and M. Edium, Amie and Larissa,

I can't express my joy, excitement, and thanks for your donations to my Mardi Gras mask project. It's so wonderful to have so many people who support the Arts and who are willing to assist in the creation of a really cool art project. Due to budget cuts, the students would have missed the opportunity to explore and create the Mardi Gras masks.

The art supplies you provided will enable the students to learn about the history of Mardi Gras and to create their very own Mardi Gras mask. We will display the projects in the school, local hospital, board office, and the district-wide art show.

I hope you will be excited when you have a chance to see the finished pieces and remember that you had an important part in the education and artistic creativity of my students.

With gratitude,
Mrs. C.
