I Like Big Books, And I Don't Know Why

My students need big books and book sets at a center during literacy center time, and a set of 12 timers that are especially designed for primary students to be used to keep a record of their repeated readings of the books.

I like BIG BOOKS! I teach first grade in a small, rural town, that has combined forces with the neighboring two towns to hopefully save our school system from failing due to the lack of money.

At the end of each school year, the students and I have a discussion about what they liked and disliked about the year. One item that popped up on the dislike list, surprising me, was the lack of big books and book sets.

So, I decided this year, with your help, I am going to have a big book center during reading time. My plan is to read a new big book every two weeks, highlight it's contents, words, vocabulary, and rhyming aspects, and then let the children reread it many times at center time. I have made pointer sticks from toys, that the students will use to point to the words they are reading. The book sets will also be housed at that center, so the students will have a choice of reading materials. Choice is an empowering tool. The students will use the timers to record how fast they can read the books and track their improvement over the course of a four week period. I can't wait to watch their faces while they are reading!

With your help, my first graders will be lying on their bellies reading books that are as big as they are! How fun is that for a kid! They will be have the opportunity to imitate me reading the book at the beginning of the year, and eventually be reading independently at the end of the year. It's going to be great!
