Read and Walk...Love of Literature and Exercise Together

My students need exposure to quality literature and they need exercise. The Librarian and Physical Education teacher are teaming up to give the students both. My students will use the ipods to listen to novels while walking and running during P.E. class. Many students in my school will not pick up difficult books that may challenge them, but they will listen. Students will later participate in discussion of the novels during library time. Our hope is to get the reluctant readers to find a love for literature in a non-threatening way with the use of technology.

My students lack books at home and often spend no time exercising outside of the school setting. We hope to tackle both of those problems with the Read and Walk Project. Students will work in both P.E. and Library during this project. They will listen to novels while walking and running during P.E. and then discuss the literature during Library. Our hope is that the non-readers will appreciate getting to exercise while listening to a novel and the non-exercisers will be motivated with a good story while walking or running. We also want all of the students to be able to participate in literature discussions regardless of their reading level. Help us improve our students with exercise and reading!!

We need ipod shuffles in order to download books. All of the 4th and 5th graders in the school will listen to the same novels during the project. We will then discuss the novels during Library.

Make a difference at our school. Obesity rates are climbing in the youth of America, help to encourage our students with the hook of technology. They will be learning and not even know it! Please support our Read and Walk Project. When will the students ever see a connection between the library and the gym again?
