FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Deacon's classroom raised $455
This project is fully funded
Our classroom is transforming a school courtyard and greenhouse into workable, educational, and sustainable green space that every single student in the school will have access to.
I teach 6th graders during the school year, and a blended class of 4th-8th graders in the summer. We are a Title I school who serves kindergarten through 8th grade in a low-income neighborhood. During the school year, all of the 6th grade classes work together on service projects, as well as focus on environmental science during a week-long trip to Outdoor School.
As our school already has the space of a large courtyard and greenhouse, all three 6th grade classes came up with a vision to transform the mostly unused space into a school garden. We have the space, but very few supplies. Teachers/volunteers have brought in old tools, soil, building materials and seeds to get students started, but we are still lacking in other areas. Our biggest benefit is that students are excited and proud to work, leaving us no need for manpower.
We need both gardening tools and small hand tools of various sizes since we have kindergarten through 8th grade students using the space. Gardening supplies, such as soil, seeds, cages, and the like, are also needed. Student learning also comes from exploration, so books about gardening are also needed.
Our students like in an under-served area and are often unable to come to school even with pencils and paper, let alone the supplies and knowledge to create a working school garden. By providing our students with these much needed supplies, we are teaching them skills that they will use for life. Your help will encourage and support the idea that students have the power to create something beautiful and useful in their lives, and to help support others who are also in need.
