Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"I teach children who experience learning disabilities in Chicago. 88% of our students are classified as low income. Our student body is 4% White, 5% Black and 91% Latino. My current case load is 19 students.
The reality is, not only are the students here faced with the "normal" challenge of learning, but they must combat a learning obstacle as well as a limited English language vocabulary. That's OK, we can even handle that. Heck, my ancestors got off the boat 150 years ago starving, illiterate, dirty and desperate. And, well, here I am.
So, these students experience learning disabilities, have limited English, but they (like my ancestors) are very, very poor. My boss, CPS (Chicago Board of Education) is in the process of eliminating 500, maybe 1000 jobs. They say, the classroom teachers and students will not be impacted...NOT!
Add to this the ever present pressure of Spring assessment, ISATs for Chicago kids. My students, who, for the most part experience learning disabilities that effect their reading, have the opportunity to shine in Math classes. And Geometry is a great opportunity for success because it is the most fun math AND is so hands-on. We have classroom calculators (a hodge-podge, but they will suffice). But, my kids need materials; I'm talking pencils, paper, protractors, compasses, chart paper, markers, etc.
You can impact significantly the Mathematical success of the entire year for these 19 students who truly want to succeed in their Math skills, especially Geometry.
