I am a 10-grade English teacher in an area that has been deeply impacted by the economy. Our county currently has the highest unemployment rate in the state. My students are eager to learn, but many don't have the resources at home to further their education. My school recently has embarked on a new journey: opening a culinary academy. I will be working with the culinary students, integrating English with their culinary studies. We are hoping that this career academy will be beneficial for both college-bound students and students who are seeking employment directly from high school.
Being the "first" class in the culinary academy, my students will experience a unique opportunity to learn and grow. These students will be able to learn in not only their academic classes, but will also be able to see how these academics are relevant to their interest: food. However, because of our school's budget, we have no money for new supplies, especially books. I am hoping to read some more food-related books with my students in order to fully interest, excite, and educate the children with relevant materials.
Our culinary academy's summative project will be "My Life in Food: A Memoir in Recipes". Students will write their life story, incorporating the important and memorable recipes they grew up with. In order to provide an example and build up to this project, I would like for my students to read the memoir "Tender at the Bone" by food critic Ruth Reichl.
You can make a huge difference in my classroom. My students are not financially able to buy their own copies of this book. By donating today, you will open up a whole new genre of writing to my students. Who knows? You could even inspire the next Ruth Reichl!
