My students need a River Tank Ecosystem complete with plants and animals, nutrient agar plates to grow bacteria from different water sources, and a digital camera to record our findings for presentations throughout the school.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher of inner-city second graders, I rarely get to expose my students to the natural world. Most of my students have never played by a river or touched a frog, so an indoor approach to water, plants, and animals might just do the trick!
Second graders love to play in and around water, but because they rarely get the opportunity to do so their experience is very limited. Discussions about street drains that flow to the ocean or reminders to turn of the water faucet mean little when these things are so abstract.
If we had the River Tank in our room, we could learn about clean water, plants, animals, and ecosystems as a whole in a meaningful, hands-on way. My budding scientists will love taking water samples from all over our school and neighborhood to see what bacteria grows in our petri dishes.
Furthermore, being able to record these experiences with digital photos will enable them to do blog posts (they're learning!) and create engaging posters about what they're learning. When they bring these images home to their families the impact of a clean-water focus could reach far beyond our classroom walls!
I have never seen a model ecosystem or anything close to it at our school, and we need your help to make this one the first! Our students have never seen anything like this and I know that it will make learning meaningful for them in an entirely new and innovative way!
