Please give my remarkable students access to the tools they deserve to learn the math they need to get to college! I teach math at a small charter school in San Francisco. My urban students are predominantly people of color, many of whom overcome enormous challenges just to get to school every day. Our school’s mission is to serve our diverse population and prepare all students for college. We do this well – 82% of this year’s graduating class are the first in their families to go to college. In our math department, the focus is on teaching abstract concepts through engaging activities in real world contexts. We train our students to work collaboratively, support each other, and take pride in their learning. As the freshmen Algebra teacher for the last four years, I have seen time and again the same pattern: the majority of our ninth graders arrive without basic skills, or a calculator of their own. I do not believe that my students’ previous negative experiences with math should hold them back from learning the material they need to have access to college. So I balance teaching basic math skills, like adding and subtracting negative numbers by hand, with teaching college-prep Algebra skills, like using the quadratic formula and solving systems of equation. However, this balance is a constant struggle: if a student haven’t been able to grasp the concept of negative numbers in the past 6 years, you can imagine that he won’t suddenly learn it from me in a day, so I have to weigh spending weeks on fourth grade material students should have learned already versus teaching them Algebra concepts they need to know to be successful high school and college math students. To address this tension, I have developed strategies that involve incorporating basic math skills into my Algebra lessons. And a critical key to this strategy? Calculators. Clearly, the ability to correctly use a calculator is, in itself, an important skill. However, access to a calculator means far more to my students than being able to do arithmetic with support. With this tool, Gustavo won’t be held back from learning about slope by his low skills and feelings of shame that he can’t answer “7 minus 13.” Tikiya will feel the success of being able to master the complicated quadratic formula problems on her homework. And Marisol won’t feel increased anxiety on test days knowing that she has to wait for the one school-provided calculator her table shares. As a school that has chosen to have small, personalized classes, we often don't have the budget to buy all the classroom supplies our students deserve. My school can’t afford to buy a calculator for each student, especially not one that is theirs to use at home for their entire high school career and beyond. So I have come to ask for your help. Your generous support of this project will give a scientific calculator to every entering ninth grader, helping them to build their basic skills while ensuring they have access to more advanced college-preparatory math. Included in the materials is a label-maker and label tape so that I can write each student's name on the calculator and case, preventing lost calculators and increasing pride in ownership to ensure they really do last all 4 years. Because of your contribution, my students will improve their basic skills while learning college-preparatory math, helping them continue to advance along the road to college!
