I have the greatest job in the world! I teach all subjects in a wonderful Title I school to fifth graders. My school is in a high-need community where the kiddos receive free breakfast and lunch.
My school has a very culturally diverse student population where over 40 different languages are spoken. Most of my students don't come to school with the same experiences I had available to me when I was in elementary school, but they do come to school with a desire to learn. I want to make our science time special for them. A lot of my students struggle with reading because of the language issue or lack of parent support at home, but they love when it's science time because it is so hands-on, and they can grasp the content of what we're studying whether they are a weak reader or a strong one.
We talk about the science process so much as we work through our different science kits that I want them to look the part of a real scientist. The lab coats I'm requesting plus the science journals I give them will help them understand what scientists do when they are conducting different inquiries. I'm hoping that feeling like scientists will encourage them to take a little more care when writing/drawing in their science journals and feel that sense of ownership of carefully going through each step of the science process.
I was so excited when I saw DonorsChoice.org advertised on the TV because I've been trying to find a way to make this project a reality for my students. You will make it possible for my students to step out of the world they live in and allow them to step into the role of a scientist. Who knows...it just may inspire one of my students to be a scientist one day!
