"Our 3rd grade class is ready to actively take full responsibility for our learning.

We want to increase the amount of time we spend listening to reading, because research shows this is the best way to increase our comprehension and improve our fluency and vocabulary.

We are a class of energetic, committed 3rd graders, and we will loop up to 4th grade together in 2009-10.

Our school is looking to move away from its current government-developed reading curriculum to a balanced literacy model, which greatly increases the amount of time students spend listening to reading. Balanced literacy is considered to be a best holistic reading model for students, particularly high-risk and high-needs learners.

We are looking for supplies that will support our readers as we spend more time reading independently.

Our class absolutely loves reading books on tape, but we currently spend more time fixing and fiddling with our 15-year-old tape players than we do reading.

Tape players are particularly important to our class, because many of our families speak languages other than English, so we don't hear read alouds very much at home.

Perhaps you've noticed that many classrooms on Donors Choose are looking to develop listening libraries. We need 24 cassette tape players so they can enjoy books at their level from our growing books on tape library. These tape players aren't just feeding a trend or an educational fad. Educational researchers Jim Trelease, Regie Routman, Debbie Diller, Gail Boushey, and Joan Moser all have reported findings proving the value of students listening to reading.

So why should you fund OUR listening library request over the dozens of others? You will be helping to start a high-quality reading revolution that will spread school-wide.

Additionally, our class is responsible and we take care of our materials so they will last for years to come.

Please help us transition to a reading program that gives students choice and power to improve their learning.

My students need 24 cassette tape players so they can enjoy books at their level from our growing books on tape library.

Dear Concord School, Liz, Anne, Mom and Dad and Anonymous Donors,
I am blown away by your generosity. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Some non-educators believe a teacher's favorite part of the summer is being able to unplug and relax far away from the classroom. Although that is admittedly quite a treat, I can honestly say that for this year, being able to have this project funded is one of the highlights of my summer.

As I mentioned in our proposal, our classroom will be switching over from a government-mandated scripted reading program to a balanced literacy model. By funding our tape players, you have ensured that our students will get off to a great start this fall. I will be sending them a summer postcard in a few weeks, and they will be so happy to know that you supported our classroom community.

I can't wait for our students to arrive this September. They have been earnestly following this project from its inception, and I know they will be thrilled to discover they can start listening to books on tape right away!

With gratitude,
Ms. H.
