My Latin III and IV students have "stepped up to the plate" going beyond the standard two year language requirement and demonstrating their commitment to learning Latin by enrolling in advanced Latin III and IV. Educators know the many benefits of studying Latin- improved SAT scores, enhanced vocabulary and grammatical skills, etc. My students know that continuing with their Latin studies will also improve their chances of being accepted into the colleges of their choice.
My students enjoy the historical and cultural studies associated with learning the Latin language. They are bored to tears by the pre-fabricated textbook readings and need something new to hold their interest. "Agricola puellam amat" only goes so far.
I carefully chose these readers because the Latin makes for an easy transition between "Gallia est provincia" and Caesar's Gallic Wars. The readings are educational and informative as well as entertaining. The students will actually remain engaged and interested in the subject matter.
Keeping students involved in literature and history in this age of videos and television is a challenge teachers face daily. Please help keep the Latin language alive and in our schools. Don't allow this beautiful language to fall with the empire!
