I teach fourth grade in an inner city school in Indiana. Our school has a poverty rate of 96%. Three homeless shelters feed into our school. With this population we have many students that cannot call items their own.
With our students moving so much they cannot have magazines sent to their homes. And with a district our size, with the movement we have, many students just have to read from our reading books. We want our students to experience reading in all forms, not just from a reading book.
The Storyworks Magazine is amazing! It has poems, book reviews written by students, plays, fiction, and non-fiction. They even have stories written by students! Storyworks contains a section with a "Grammar Cop" who helps students to practice grammar correctly.
This magazine will allow our students to have additional reading sources besides our reading book. They will have a magazine that they can take home with them and share with younger brothers and sisters. This magazine can develop a love of reading and writing in our students. There are so many types of reading and writing activities that the students will love learning! This magazine is seen as something fun and not "work."
You can make learning fun for our fourth graders with the purchase of this magazine. You will empower students to take ownership of their learning. You will make it possible for students to take an interest in reading and hopefully teach their younger siblings the love of reading and learning.
