Our school serves some of the most affluent students and some of the most destitute students in our state. Everyday we try our best to "level the playing field" to provide quality instruction to every student.
Part of the learning experience is building your own idea of a "great" answer around what you already know and what you can glean from other sources. As I present material to my students, I am only able to give them at best a few other ways of thinking of situations. I try to give students opportunities to critique each other's works, but that takes quite a bit of time and students tend to stick with students of "similar" backgrounds, thoughts, and ideals. I would like to implement technology to help all students get more experience in thinking about MANY other people's answers and thinking about what constitutes a "great" answer or solution.
A document camera would allow our students to share their work instantly with the rest of the class. Whether students choose to submit their own work or I randomly pick from a pile of papers, students will be exposed to more points of view than we could have done previously. I can even bring in work from outside of our classroom, whether be from a teacher teaching the same class in our building, from another school in our district, or even from student responses to questions from Advanced Placement Exams.
This is only the tip of the iceberg! A document camera would also allow us to put a copy of the book on the whiteboard and have students come to the board to work through solutions, highlight key aspects of the problem, ask detailed questions, etc. Geometry classes could project a 2-dimensional representation of a 3-dimensional object and "see" how and why we create perspective drawings. AP Statistics classes could create graphs of data on post-it notes and I could combine them on a single sheet of paper under the document camera for the whole class to see the pros and cons of each graph. Computer Science classes could quickly compare code or pseudo-code that different students have created.
Your help with provide our students with learning opportunities that are currently not feasible. A document camera would provide our students with a learning environment that can react quickly to current student difficulties. Having this capability for just in time learning will improve student performance and increase our students' confidence in themselves. Thank you.
