I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand. ~Chinese Proverb. I am a fourth grade teacher at a K-5 Title One elementary school in Mississippi. Due to the financial crisis that our state is facing, we have received numerous budget cuts. My students are excited about learning. I feel that it is my job as their teacher to make sure that they stay excited, regardless of the issues that we encounter.
Although my students enjoy mathematics, I do not have supplies to make math visual and hands-on. This is a major concern for me because I realize that children learn best when they are active rather than passive learners. As a teacher, it is my goal for my students to become confident in their ability to do math, and to ultimately become mathematical problem solvers.
I believe that the solution to this problem is manipulatives. Manipulatives help relieve boredom in students, and offer a change from the textbook method of learning. My students will be able to explore mathematical concepts and use their imaginations. Using manipulatives will also help my students learn to work together cooperatively in solving problems. In order to update to a hands-on method of teaching math, we need manipulatives such as equation tiles, probability spinners, protractors, fraction circles, and place value cards.
By funding our project, you will make it possible for my students to make mathematical connections.
