Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Animals Want Me to Explore I teach first grade and have an enrollment of 20 students. Our school is considered to have a family climate with all teachers teaming up to work together and make sure our students excel to their best of their ability.

After a unit on plant study, I decided to take it a bit farther. We read books about earthworms and how the earth needs them to grow our plants. I brought in earthworms and had the students hold them and measure them. We also discussed things that worms decompose. We made a home for the worms and put items on the soil. Observation was done daily and students were amazed at what was decomposed into the soil. They also witnessed first hand that when worms decompose things 'it smells'! At the end, I gathered materials around the classroom. We went to the foyer and the students became worms and looked for items to decompose. Believe me, this gave them long life learning.

I love teaching about animals and plants. I use higher order thinking activities. I want the children to observe plants and animals in the real world. With the items I have in the cart it will enable them to do this first hand. The combination of colors, the recall of various animals and plants, the observation of the life stages of a frog and a butterfly will be the materials used to make them long life learners. They will be able to elaborate on them and allow them to pass their science TAKS test in the future.

With the help of many donors out in the world who care about the future of earth's inhabitants will feel satisfied that they had input into a child's learning. Let's recall our school days and ask ourselves did we have these experiences and materials? Was my learning fun in my primary grades? You will give my students that fun!
