Tolerance After the Holocaust

We need 35 copies of "Alicia: My Story", by Alicia Appleman-Jurman.

I have created a Holocaust Studies and Human Behavior class that encompasses the history of Genocide and its current occurrences in today’s world. The classroom set of books will be used to help the students ask how individual prejudices lead towards such events and what possible actions can be taken to diminish the effects of discrimination.

The students, parents and surrounding community understand that the Holocaust Survivors won't be around forever to tell their stories, but the school system does not have the money to fund a new class. We also have a 70% Caucasian student body and a large number of Hmong and other Asian students, as well as an increasing number of Hispanics. Most of the students isolate themselves with those that are most familiar to them, without understanding or accepting of others’ cultures.

This class will give students the freedom to examine their own biases as well as activities to be done throughout the school to increase awareness. This class will not only provide the ability to learn about the Holocaust and Genocide, but students will be able to do projects that involve the rest of the school in order to understand the importance and results of activism. (Some of the projects planned: Mix-It-Up at Lunch, Hidden Bias Internet Tests, Invitation to Guest Speakers, and Letter Writing Campaigns)These projects will increase individual understanding of how such prejudices and discrimination can even affect their own school.

There is NO class like this in our school system. Teaching tolerance should be a requirement and not an option. Community populations in North Carolina are now more diverse than ever. Children who learn how to accept diversity in others will hopefully maintain these beliefs as adults. Remember that Genocides didn't stop with the end of the Third Reich.
