While my students are 7th and 8th graders, their average reading level is 3rd grade. Additionally, over half are second language learners who are working hard to acquire English fluently.
Imagine listening to many of your friends discuss the latest events between Bella and Edward and not being able to join in! Wanting to read these exciting books but getting so frustrated after the first few pages, that you give up. Now imagine you have the chance to read this book with the help of an audio CD. You would now have the chance to discuss plot lines, character descriptions or even differences between the movie and the book. My students, boys and girls alike, have been bitten by the Reading Vampire that is "Twilight." But because so many of my readers find anything higher than 3rd grade too difficult for them, they shy away from them. With the combination of book and audio book - my students who struggle with books that most 7th and 8th graders have no trouble with - will be able to read along with and enjoy some of the same books their peers do. It may seem like such a small thing but it will give them an opportunity to see that they can be successful with a novel that otherwise would be out of their reach. My students need 2 sets of Stephenie Meyer's "Twilight" series along with audio CDs and 4 CD players. HIDEMrs. C.'s Classroom:
