My students need 40 copies of "The Cartoon Guide to Genetics" by Larry Gonick and Mark Wheelis.
FULLY FUNDED! Mr. D.'s classroom raised $908
This project is fully funded
I teach Genetics to high-need 10th and 11th grade students. The student population consist mostly of immigrants who struggle with English. Their difficulties in English makes learning science extraordinarily difficult, especially the molecular sciences like Genetics. Being an urban public school, our student population has a high percentage of special education students along with ESL/ELL students.
Student reading levels are below grade level. The books we have at our disposal to teach the material are not suitable for teaching complex ideas since they cannot comprehend the text.
A class set of "The Cartoon Guide to Genetics" would make it easier for students to learn at a more comfortable pace. The material is difficult but to illustrate the concepts in this manner improves their attitude and understanding of science.
Providing my students with these books would mean promoting students to pursue science in college or in the real world. Urban students don't understand the implications of what they learn in abstract classes like genetics but it is a necessity to understand basic inheritance along with the medical implications of knowing genetics. Providing my students with these books will empower them to make educated choices that will positively impact themselves and everyone around them.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
