Biology helps unlock the "mysteries" and "secrets" of the world within and around us. This is the message I hope to convey to my students. Currently I teach an inquisitive bunch of high school students, ranging from freshmen to seniors.

My students have really taken to our topics on the human body. "How's" and "Why's" are often asked before starting another body system unit. In addition, many of my student are "hands-on" learners or plan to pursue careers in the field of science, technology and/or medicine. They find laboratory activities, especially those that simulate popular television shows like "House" or "CSI" extremely interesting and valuable skills they can apply to future jobs. I thoroughly enjoy the students process of discovery, critical thinking, and teamwork through laboratory activities, however, many of our school funds have been cut short, which makes it all the more challenging to round up enough funds for laboratory supplies, equipment, and cost of shipping.

One of the end-of-the-year units I cover is the urinary system. To build up interest in the topic, emphasize laboratory techniques, problem solving, and teamwork, I thought it would be interesting to do a (simulated) urine analysis where the students would have to determine the "illness" of our "patient". The biology kits would provide a fantastic opportunity as all urine samples are simulated, some "abnormal", so students can run tests similar to those conducted in medical labs without too much of the "ewwwww" factor (of an actual urine sample). Along with technique, a valuable learning opportunity presents itself as the "abnormal" factors that may be found in the (simulated) urine suggest potential disorders/diseases we have discussed earlier in the year.

Science can at times be a challenging subject to tackle, however, with your help, the topics covered in the classroom will make the leap from the textbook to the "real-world" -- perhaps inspiring a few more to become our future scientists and medical professionals.
