I teach freshmen at a Title 1 school with a large special ed. population. We have all ability levels at our school, but many of our students read below the 9th grade level. We have a wonderful program which combines English I with global history. We also have an innovative college and career program. We want to give our students every advantage and opportunity possible.
As a relatively new school, we are still trying to fill up our book room. Unfortunately, right now it's pretty empty. We don't have any English textbooks. We've simply been using whatever we can get our hands on. Many of our students are below reading level and qualify for special education services. However, that doesn't mean they can't learn Shakespeare!
If we had class sets of Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare Made Easy, we'd be able to support our students while reading a challenging classic. This will be our students first exposure to Shakespeare, and we want them to enjoy it. Reading Romeo and Juliet gives us an opportunity to do a lot of creative lesson planning, while covering the NY ELA standards. We'll study the history of Shakespeare, practice reading comprehension and analysis, learn Shakespearean insults, act out scenes from the play, compare scenes from the movie to the play, and much more.
Almost every 9th grade student in America reads To Kill a Mockingbird, The Odyssey and, Romeo and Juliet. We've read The Odyssey and have plans to pair To Kill a Mockingbird with American history their junior year. Now we just need to find copies of Romeo and Juliet. Our students are already trying to overcome many disadvantages. Please don't let our students miss out on this learning opportunity that so many other schools take for granted.
