My Life Skills students are a uniquely wonderful group of kids whose lives are uniquely touched by the economic downturn. Their homes were being foreclosed and their parents losing their jobs long before anyone announced a crisis. As juniors and seniors about to enter college or the world of work, they need lots of practice in good financial literacy skills.
In my class we use the National Endowment for Financial Education’s High School Financial Planning Program curriculum. In addition, we do a lot of role play. The students practice skills such as signing up for a bank account, engaging in smart credit card use, and negotiating a raise. They also practice doing things like interviewing for jobs and making phone calls to potential employers.
While the students can observe one another, they can’t observe themselves practicing these skills because our school doesn’t have a video camera. My students need a camcorder with a case to record role plays during life skills class.
With your help, my students could record themselves during their role plays, then replay the tape and assess their own skills. They can observe their own progress over time. In addition, I can teach them to edit their role plays in iMovie to create a video portfolio of their skills. Thank you!
