Have you ever wanted to make a difference in a child's life, but you just were not sure how to do that? In my 3rd grade classroom, that is exactly what I try to do everyday. Even as a child, I loved Math, but I wasn't taught about hands-on experiences. I never used manipulatives to learn math until I was in college, learning how to teach math to elementary students.
Many of my students come from poverty; some of them are being raised by grandparents or even great-grandparents; and some of them simply don't have the support they need at home to be able to learn difficult skills and concepts taught in 3rd grade.
Because I have been teaching for less than 5 years, my classroom has not been adequately stocked with math manipulatives. During math time, I begin the day's lesson with a whole group introduction; then, we break off into groups to discover deeper meaning of the math skill or concept being taught. The problem is: I don't have enough manipulatives to allow students to work independently with hands-on materials.
The solution? I need your help and support to stock my classroom with materials that would increase the learning experiences, as well as foster a deep and genuine love of mathematics in my children. With materials at their fingertips, learning will be more exciting to them. Math manipulatives will also help reach those students who learn by doing.
With your help, my third graders could develop a true love for getting their hands into mathematics. These are our future mathematicians. Learning the skills and concepts required for third grade will also help prepare them for the real world. As I have always told my students, "Math is everywhere." Learning as much as possible TODAY will ensure that they become excellent citizens in the future!
