Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I'm a first year teacher in a high-need community looking for creative ways to instill a love of reading in my 70 sixth grade students. My big idea: a weekly book club.

While I've assigned nightly reading as part of their Language Arts homework, I've often found that my students cling to books with large font and tons of pictures. Whenever I've suggested borrowing larger books from the classroom library, they hesitate because the thickness intimidates them. Since the average reading level in my classroom is 4th grade, working together outside of class on a larger book like "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" would prove to them that they can conquer thick books. My students are crazy about books with mystery and adventure and I'm confident they will be captivated by the story.

Now that I've got the students on board to come in after school and read, I simply need the supplies to make it happen. I'm in need of 25 copies of "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" as well as one audio version. By working on reading together after school, I can ensure that my kids grow at least 2 years in reading by the end of the school year.
