Our school is a 98% poverty urban school which serves multiple races and ethnicities. Our students come in every day ready to learn and are so enthusiastic about school. I enjoy being able to reach these students and provide them with a safe space to grow. My fifth graders are eager to learn and optimistic about their futures. My goal is for each of them to further their education either with college or a technical school.

I am passionate about giving my students every opportunity to succeed. Many struggle with the subject of history because much of what is written is hard for them to understand and is written above their grade level. I love Social Studies and want my students to experience that love as well. We cover a wide range of topics through textbooks, magazines, Internet stories, and supplemental books.

I would like to add one more resource to our Social Studies curriculum and that is historical graphic novels. These comic- like books are appealing to all levels of readers and can even bring in those who are reluctant about reading. Graphic novels are huge for today's children and what better way to bring them into the classroom than by teaching history!
