Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My sixth grade students do not have art classes in school. I teach English to high needs students at a middle school. I make visual representation a large part of the students' reading and writing work as a teaching tool and to engage those students who are interested in drawing and art and do not have an opportunity to do it elsewhere.
My students have consistently expressed a desire to do more art, and I have found an inspiring way to combine my teaching of English with art for a creation myth unit. For a month long project, students will read and discuss creation myths from a variety of cultures. During this time, students will be studying Ancient Greece and Greek mythology in Social Studies and the origins of the world in Science. After the students have been fully immersed in this study, they will then have an opportunity to write and illustrate their own creation myths.
To make the students' illustrated creation myths pieces of work they will keep for years to come, I need resources to make it special. I am requesting books on mythology to inspire their work, and art supplies and blank books so students can create their own fully imagined and illustrated myths. I have requested glitter pens, metallic paints, markers and stencils, so each page can represent their own creativity, and the cover of their book can become a work of art.
You will make it possible for my students to have a fun time writing and illustrating their own books that represent thoughtful cross-curricular work. Once these are finished, I plan to invite their parents to readings and viewings of the myths. I also want to bring the sixth graders to a nearby preschool so they can read and show their creation myth books to younger children. With your help, students will do valuable work that they will take much pride in and share with their community.
